VHF/DSC Setup: Why It's Your Real Safety Net Past Cell Range
Starlink gets you weather and messages 60 miles out, but it doesn’t call the Coast Guard for you. When something actually goes wrong offshore, the tool that matters is still the one that’s been standard on boats for decades: a VHF radio with DSC. Most boats have one. Fewer have it actually set up right, and the gap between “installed” and “actually works in an emergency” is exactly one missing step — GPS.
What DSC actually does
Every modern fixed-mount VHF has a red distress button under a plastic flip cover. Press and hold it for a few seconds and the radio transmits a digital burst on channel 70 containing your boat’s MMSI number, then automatically switches to channel 16 for voice. Any DSC-equipped vessel or Coast Guard station within range gets an alert with your identity, and — if it’s set up correctly — your exact GPS position and the time.
That “if it’s set up correctly” is the entire point of this article.
The gap almost nobody checks: GPS
According to the Coast Guard Navigation Center, a DSC distress alert only includes position information if the radio has an internal GPS receiver or is wired to an external one. No GPS connection means your distress call goes out with your boat’s ID and nothing else — no position, no way for anyone to find you. A radio with DSC but no GPS hookup is a name broadcast, not a rescue tool.
The fix is simple on current-generation radios: buy a fixed-mount VHF with GPS built in, and this stops being something you have to wire or think about yourself. “GPS built in” takes two forms depending on the radio — some put the GPS receiver right on the front panel, others ship with a small, already-matched external GPS puck antenna you mount somewhere with a clear view of the sky. MMSI: the number that makes DSC mean something
DSC and AIS both run on a nine-digit Maritime Mobile Service Identity number, and it has to be registered before any of this works. For a recreational boat staying in U.S. waters, registration is free and takes a few minutes through BoatUS or the U.S. Power Squadrons — no FCC license required unless you’re taking the boat into international waters, in which case you’d get the MMSI through an FCC ship station license instead. Once the number is entered into the radio, most units lock it in — it’s not something you casually reprogram, so get it right the first time and keep the registration (owner info, boat description, emergency contacts) current. Range: fixed-mount vs. handheld
VHF is line-of-sight, so antenna height is the biggest factor in how far a signal actually reaches — but the practical difference between a fixed-mount and a handheld comes down to both antenna height and power output together. A 25-watt fixed-mount radio running through a properly mounted antenna typically reaches somewhere in the 15 to 25 nautical mile range. Where shore coverage actually ends
The Coast Guard’s Rescue 21 system — the shore-based tower network that listens for distress calls — covers a minimum of 20 nautical miles off the coast along the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific shorelines. Inside that line, a Coast Guard station is very likely to hear a distress call directly. Past it — which is most of a run to the canyons — your DSC alert depends on another vessel within range picking it up and relaying it, which is exactly why MMSI accuracy and GPS position matter even more the farther out you fish. This is also the point where an EPIRB or PLB stops being optional gear and starts being the thing that actually gets a helicopter to your position when shore-based VHF can’t hear you at all.
