CMOR Mapping Chips vs. Stock Charts: What the Extra Bottom Detail Buys You
Every chartplotter I’ve ever run came with a chart already loaded, and every one of those stock charts was good enough to get me to the ramp and back without hitting anything. What none of them were good enough for was finding the six-inch ledge that holds every scamp on a piece of bottom the size of a truck. That’s the gap CMOR Mapping was built to fill, and after running it alongside stock charts for a few seasons, I think it’s worth being specific about what you’re actually paying for and when it matters.
What “stock” charts are actually built from
When people say “stock charts,” they usually mean whatever came preloaded or bundled with the plotter — Garmin BlueChart g3/g3 Vision, Navionics, or C-MAP on the Simrad/Lowrance/B&G side. These are built primarily from NOAA survey data, which for a lot of offshore bottom hasn’t been resurveyed with modern multibeam sonar in decades. Contour lines are typically drawn at 5, 6, or 10-foot intervals depending on depth range, and crowd-sourced depth data (Garmin’s Quickdraw, Navionics SonarChart) fills in some of the gaps where recreational boats have logged soundings.
That’s plenty of resolution for navigation. It’s not enough resolution to tell you where the actual lip of a ledge is, or whether a piece of structure has 3 feet of relief or 15.
What CMOR Mapping does differently
CMOR builds its chips from dedicated bathymetric survey work — much finer contour intervals (commonly down to 1-foot lines in the depth ranges that matter for bottom fishing) layered over high-resolution shaded relief. The result looks less like a nautical chart and more like a topographic map of the ocean floor. Hard bottom, ledges, humps, and wreck footprints that are invisible as a single pixel on a stock chart show up as actual shapes with definable edges.
CMOR chips are sold as a supplemental data card that runs alongside your existing chart, not a replacement for your base navigation chart. You still want a current BlueChart or Navionics card in the plotter for aids to navigation, tides, and coastal detail — CMOR is the bottom-structure layer you flip to once you’re working a spot.

Where the detail actually pays off
The place I notice the difference most is working new numbers rather than known spots. On a stock chart, a piece of bottom that turns out to be a productive ledge often looks like nothing more than a slightly darker shade of blue — maybe a single contour line if you’re lucky. On CMOR, the same spot shows a defined edge with a direction, a high side and a low side, and often a footprint you can actually visualize before you ever drop a bait. That matters for scamp and grouper structure fishing, where the fish are relating to a specific lip or ledge face rather than the general area.
It also pairs well with a trolling motor that can hold you on structure. Once you can actually see where the ledge breaks on the chart, spot-locking with the Garmin Force Kraken over the high side of it — instead of the flat sand ten feet away — stops being guesswork.
Where stock charts still do the job fine
If most of your fishing is nearshore, inshore, or you’re running known GPS numbers from a buddy or a fishing report, the extra bottom resolution buys you less. Stock charts are also what you need for the basics CMOR doesn’t cover — buoys, channel markers, tide stations, and the coastal detail that keeps you off the rocks getting to and from the grounds. I’d never run CMOR as my only chart card; I run it as a second card in a second slot (or a second plotter) alongside a current Garmin GPSMAP unit or whatever’s at the helm, per the guidance in my chartplotter buying breakdown.
Practical setup notes
CMOR chips install the same way any chart card does — into a card slot on a compatible Garmin, Furuno, Simrad, Lowrance, or B&G unit. On multi-function displays with more than one chart source, you can typically split-screen your standard navigation chart against the CMOR layer, or toggle between them with a button press. If you’re running twin displays like a lot of center consoles do, it’s worth dedicating one screen to CMOR full-time once you’re working bottom, and leaving the other on your standard chart for situational awareness.
Bottom line
Stock charts get you to the grounds. CMOR (or any dedicated bathymetric chart product — it’s not the only one, just the one most mid-Atlantic and Carolina bottom fishermen have settled on) helps you actually read what’s under the boat once you’re there. If you fish structure for a living or a hobby rather than just running known numbers, the extra resolution is worth the card slot. If you’re mostly running to spots someone already gave you, save the money and put it into fuel.
